Pangs surfaced in 1996, when Matt issued a couple of home-recorded
cassette releases in very limited runs. These recordings were grounded
by drums tracks Justin had recorded prior to fleeing to South America
to avoid something he would only describe as "legal trouble."
Several months later, Justin returned, and Pangs released another
cassette, Spore Fraud Laundromat, which garnered a review
in Tape Op.
With the addition of bassist/multi-instrumental rock maven Nathan
Ruckman, Pangs better realized their garage pop vision on the 1999
release Northern Youth Exchange, which was also written up
in Tape Op,
and featured in the online Anti-Elitist Audio 'Zine. The band played
a handful of shows after this release, and the song "Chronic
Flashlight" from NYE was featured on We Are Not
Alone: Songs For The Lo-Fi Generation, Volume 5 an international
compilation put together and released by Alessandro Crestani on
his amazing cassette label Best
Kept Secret.
In 2001, Pangs started work with Kyle Sheaffer (Ex-Hustlers) on
Stalemates & Sad Pastimes at his Studio
Neal. During the (long) course of the recording, Nathan became
a father. Though his spirit still pervades Pangs, his duties were
assumed by the very talented and equally multi-instrumental Lance
Workman (Ex-Hustlers).
